Grand Theft Auto 6 is getting closer to release, and players are looking forward to what’s next. So far, we know the game will take place in Vice City and follow two main characters, Lucia and Jason, in a story inspired by Bonnie and Clyde. However, fans are more curious about one thing: Will familiar characters like Michael, Franklin, or Trevor from GTA 5 return in GTA 6?
How Rockstar Handles Character Crossovers
If you have been playing the GTA series, you would know that each of the games in the series tells its own story but still takes place in the same shared world. This shared world, known as the “HD universe,” includes GTA 4, GTA 5, and now GTA 6. Rockstar Games often brings back characters from older games, but usually in smaller supporting roles. Some notable past crossovers include:
- Packie from GTA 4 appeared as a heist crew member in GTA 5.
- Johnny Klebitz from GTA 4 is making a brief cameo in GTA 5.
- Characters like Gay Tony, Brucie, and Michelle are returning in GTA Online.
It’s worth noting that characters from the “3D universe” games (GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas) don’t cross over into the newer HD universe games. So if you’re hoping to see Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6, you’ll likely be disappointed, especially considering the passing of actor Ray Liotta.

Will Michael, Franklin, or Trevor Return in GTA 6?
When it comes to GTA 5’s beloved trio, there are several reasons why they might show up in GTA 6:
- Positive actor relationships: Unlike Michael Hollick (who voiced Niko Bellic and had payment disputes after GTA 4), the actors behind Michael, Franklin, and Trevor have stayed on good terms with Rockstar Games. Ned Luke (Michael), Shawn Fonteno (Franklin), and Steven Ogg (Trevor) have all spoken positively about their time working with the gaming studio.
- Canonical survival: In GTA 5’s main ending, all three characters survive, which leaves the door open for them to show up again.
- Timeline compatibility: Leaked gameplay has confirmed GTA 6 is set after GTA 5, making crossovers theoretically possible.
If these characters do return, here’s how they could fit into GTA 6:

Now a successful movie producer, Michael could be in Vice City working on a film project. This would be an easy way to include him without affecting the choices players made in GTA 5. |

Having established himself as a legitimate multimillionaire, Franklin could be visiting Vice City for business or pleasure. |

Trevor could show up in the rural, swampy areas seen in the GTA 6 trailer, which would match his wild and unpredictable personality. |
While cameos are certainly possible, it’s unlikely any GTA 5 characters would play significant roles in the main story of GTA 6. The focus of the game will remain firmly on the new protagonists, Lucia and Jason. What do you think? Would you like to see Michael, Franklin, or Trevor make appearances in GTA 6, or would you prefer a completely fresh start with all-new characters?
